Across all areas of our business, we are working hard to be part of an elevated world that operates within nature’s boundaries and continuously improve our environmental footprint. There are many different types of carbon offset initiatives all using different kinds of methods but we wanted a solution that would align with our mission to be an altruistic brand and meet our criteria.
Good offsets need to actually do the thing they are meant to be doing, and these things need to be able to be verified by third-party carbon protocol body Verra.
The carbon offset needs to have a measurable reduction of CO2 emissions that would not have happened otherwise.
It must be a long term solution. Carbon captured and represented in offsets needs to be stored forever, or for a very, very long time.
We wanted to invest in projects that have the ability to scale and receive results quickly, without relying on manual processes that take up a lot of time and resources.
So far we have chosen two projects work with to become carbon neutral and give back to the communities in which we draw resources. Pachama helps to conserve existing rainforests and communities and the Give and Grow projects helps to replant the trees lost.
Carbon offsets alone won’t solve the problem of global warming, not by a long shot. There are one billion hectares of land on earth where we can plant trees without impacting agriculture. This would allow for 1.2 trillion trees, which could capture more than 200 gigatons of carbon from the atmosphere, wiping out a decade of the damage already done. It’s not nearly enough. But it’s a start. As a brand we are committed to make a difference and we'll keep investing in solutions to figure out what works best.
Where do our donations go?
There has been a lot of global momentum around tree planting, but it’s incredibly important to protect old-growth forests. New trees take years to develop their carbon-absorbing powers; mature forests are already doing the job.
Not only this, but existing Amazon forests are home to 10% of the world’s known species and 40,000 different plants.
Preserving these ecosystems, and supporting local communities that protect them are also brilliant side effects of conserving existing trees.
Sadly, illegal timber poaching of the rainforest is leading to deforestation at a rate of three football fields per minute. We have already lost around 17% of the entire rainforest and through Pachama the donations from every purchase help to slow and prevent this loss.
Through the Give and Grow project we give a percentage of each sale to support the planting of new trees. Across all areas of our business, we are working hard to be part of an elevated world that operates within nature’s boundaries and continuously improve our environmental footprint
It costs as little as $0.11 to provide support and care for a tree to be planted and start fighting climate change. Through the real time donation tracking this is an exciting way for us to see how many trees the contributions we make from our clothing can make a positive difference.
